The Insurance penetration in India is around 4.2% only which is significantly lower than the world average of 7.4%. Also, Insurance density in India is around US$ 91 only which is again significantly lower than the world average of US$ 874. Thus, in future there is huge potential for the growth of Indian Insurance industry.*
At present, the Health Insurance & Motor Insurance (policies are issued mostly to: individuals, personal lines of business, sole proprietorship, micro enterprises & groups) together accounts for more than 75% of the Indian Non-life insurance market. *
Now, every year more than 27 lacs insurance claims gets either repudiated or closed by the insurance companies. To make the situation worst, an average claimant in India lacks technical know-how, awareness about escalation or dispute resolution mechanisms or mediums/forums, time to pursue, etc.
Surprisingly, at most only 1.5% of these 27 Lacs repudiated or closed insurance claims lodge their grievance with the Insurance Ombudsman Offices.**
